Your first sit

About five minutes. A chair is fine. This is my real voice, not a stock narrator. You can pause whenever you want.

I have taught meditation since 2004. This is the sit I wish people had on day one.

The first questions are almost always the same. How do I start. Do I have to sit on the floor. What if my mind will not sit still. What if I am Christian. What if it feels like nothing is happening.

This is not a five-hour video course. It is a short path: one honest page at a time, plus the sit above.

You do not need to sign up. You do not need a cushion. You can read Lesson 1 and sit for five minutes before you decide whether to come back.

The eight lessons

  1. Lesson 1 · ready to read

    Your first five minutes

How to start. What meditation is. A five-minute breath sit. Why a wandering mind is not a failure.

Read the lesson: How to start meditating

  2. Lesson 2 · ready to read

You can sit in a chair

You do not have to sit on the floor. Chair, bed, walking, eyes open or closed, music or silence. Permission first.

Read the lesson: You do not have to sit on the floor

  3. Lesson 3 · ready to read

    Meditation and mindfulness

Are they the same thing. When to use which word. How this differs from prayer, yoga, or a nap. Short and plain.

Read the lesson: Meditation vs mindfulness

  4. Lesson 4 · coming

When the mind will not sit still

Anxiety, restlessness, a brain that keeps scrolling. How to sit anyway, without pretending the mind is already quiet.

If anxiety is the thing, you can read why you can't relax on command now. That page is live.

  5. Lesson 5 · coming

    Night sits and sleep

Morning or night. Sitting before bed. Why you get sleepy. What helps, and what is just a nap with extra branding.

  6. Lesson 6 · coming

    If you are Christian

Can you meditate and keep your faith. Meditation and prayer. Honest answers, no sales pitch, no pressure to buy anything.

  7. Lesson 7 · coming

    Pick one simple technique

Breath, body, walking, a simple phrase. You do not need all of them. You need one you will actually do.

  8. Lesson 8 · coming

When it feels like nothing is happening

Why it feels hard. Why "nothing happened" is so common. Whether to keep going. How to tell a real sit from a performance in your head.

Lessons 4 through 8 will appear here as they are written. I am not putting fake dates on them.

Sit with other people (optional)

If you want a live sit this week, I host a free guided meditation every Wednesday at 6:00 PM PT. About thirty minutes. Camera off is fine. You do not need to talk. Details are on the free page.

That is the whole invite. Come if it helps. Skip it if a chair at home is enough.

How to use this path

Play the sit. Read Lesson 1. If you want a voice in your ear later, there are short downloads you can keep. Optional.

Then wait for the next lesson, or wander the resources page if a specific question is already itching.

Start small. Come back when you are ready.
